Poker is a game of skill and strategy that involves betting on your own hand against the rest of the players in the table. The goal is to win a showdown by having the best five card hand at the end of the game.<\/p>\n
There are many different variations of Poker, each with slightly different rules. But all variants are played with cards and chips. The game starts with the dealer shuffling and dealing all players a number of cards, then each player makes forced bets (the blind or ante) before they can act. In some games the cards are dealt face down, in others they are dealt face up. A central pot of money is built up during the betting rounds by players placing bets into the pot.<\/p>\n
In addition to making bets, players can also signal their hands to other players. Using signals can help you maximise your profit by minimising the losses from your losing hands and maximising the winnings from your good hands. This is called min-maxing.<\/p>\n
The earliest known form of Poker was described in two separate publications, Jonathan Green in Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling (1836), and Joe Cowell in Thirty Years Passed Among the Players in England and America (1829).
