In the early history of poker, games were generally played with a small number of cards dealt face down to each player, which were called the hole cards. This gave the advantage to players with stronger cards, as they could conceal their hand from other players until the end of the betting round. Later, when a larger number of cards were added to the game, it became possible for weaker hands to win.
