Poker is a card game where each player is dealt a hand of cards and competes against other players for a pot of money. The game has a number of different variations, but the basic rules are the same.<\/p>\n
The game begins with a dealer who shuffles the deck and deals cards to the players clockwise around the table. Each player is given one card face up and one card face down.<\/p>\n
After the initial deal, a betting interval is held. In each betting interval a player to the left of the dealer must either “call” the bet by putting into the pot the same number of chips as the previous bettor, or raise, which means putting in more than enough chips to call; or drop (“fold”), which means he puts no chips into the pot, discards his hand, and is out of the betting until the next deal.<\/p>\n
In a fixed-limit game, no one may bet or raise more than the established limit. However, if any player’s exposed cards include a pair, this limit is doubled.<\/p>\n
When playing poker, it is important to develop quick instincts. To do this, practice the game and watch other players at the table.<\/p>\n
In addition to developing instincts, a player should also have an understanding of the various poker hands.
