The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Some variants add jokers or use multiple decks. The cards are ranked from Ace high to Ace low. All hands contain at least five cards. Wild Cards are also available in some variants. These cards may be any suit, but some of them have a specific suit.

In Poker, each player has a certain number of chips that are valued by the game’s rules. For games with seven or more players, all players should be provided with poker chips. The lowest-valued chip is called a “white,” while the highest-valued chip is called a “red.” A blue chip, on the other hand, has the same value as a white chip. Players purchase these chips by “buying in” – putting money into the pot before the game begins.

The game’s rules require a dealer for each round. This person is responsible for shuffling the deck and dealing the cards to the players. Sometimes, a non-player will be assigned to this role for the entire game. Traditionally, players alternate being the dealer. In live poker, the dealer is usually a plastic disk that is passed to the next player.

Poker hands consist of five cards. A flush is a poker hand that contains five cards. The best possible hand, however, is a straight or four of a kind.
