The Basics of Poker

Poker

Using a deck of 52 cards, players must create the best hand. The player with the highest rank wins the pot. Depending on the type of game, players may choose to bluff or bet.

A hand containing five cards in sequence is called a flush. The highest value card starts the flush. If there are more than one flush in the hand, the higher value card wins.

Poker can be played with any number of players. The ideal number is six to eight. In some countries, poker is known as “quads” or “fours of a kind.”

The best hand is the highest ranked card. The rank of individual cards is ace, king, queen, and jack. The ace can be counted high or low in a straight, but cannot be counted as both a high and a low card.

A pair is two cards of equal rank. When comparing pairs, the lowest odd card should be used. The pair that beats the pair with the lowest odd card is called a straight.

The straight is the lowest rank of a poker hand. The straight is introduced during the American Civil War.

The flush is a hand consisting of five cards of the same suit. The highest card breaks ties. In a tie, the second highest card will determine the winner. A hand that contains three cards of the same rank is called a straight flush.

The poker game Texas Hold’Em is the most common. It is played with a 52 card deck of English cards.
