The Casino – The Indoor Amusement Park For Adults

The modern casino is a little like an indoor amusement park for adults, with most of the entertainment (and profits for the owners) coming from games of chance. Slot machines, black jack, roulette, craps and keno provide the billions of dollars in profit raked in by casinos each year.

Casinos are built to entertain, with large-scale shows and elaborate themes. They also offer a variety of food and drink, and they are staffed with people to take care of your every need. They also have high-tech surveillance systems that can track everything that happens on the floor, in the rooms and even through the windows and doors.

Some casinos have catwalks in the ceiling that allow surveillance personnel to look down on tables and slots through one-way glass. This is how cheats are caught. Many casinos give out free goods and services to regulars, especially those who play the most hours at the table or spend a lot of money on the slot machines. These are called comps.

Although gambling has been around for centuries, the casino as we know it today developed in the 16th century during a gambling craze that swept Europe. During this time, Italian aristocrats often held private parties at places called ridotti. These were basically private clubs that allowed them to gamble without being bothered by the Italian Inquisition. These parties inspired the idea of a central place where different types of gambling could be found under one roof.
